Changing the Oil in a Can-Am Maverick X3: A Comprehensive Guide
Performing an oil change on your Can-Am Maverick X3 is essential for maintaining engine performance and longevity. While the concept is straightforward, the design of the X3 presents unique challenges that require careful attention and preparation.
Tools and Supplies You'll Need
- 4 quarts of XPS 10W-50 full synthetic engine oil
- 2 quarts of XPS 75W-140 synthetic transmission oil
- 1 Can-Am oil filter element
- 1 new O-ring for the filter housing
- 2 new crush washers for the drain bolts
- 10mm and 17mm sockets
- Torque wrench
- Air saw (optional)
- Vacuum pump
- Form-a-funnel
- 5/8-inch hose and a funnel
- Drain pan, pig mat, shop rags, and gloves
Step-by-Step Oil Change Procedure
1. Draining the Engine Oil
Locate the oil fill cap above the left rear tire on the driver's side. Unscrew the cap to expose the fill tube and use a vacuum pump to extract the old oil. This is helpful since the drain bolts are hard to reach with the skid plate in place.
2. Accessing the Drain Bolts
The drain bolts are located behind the passenger firewall. Removing the skid plate may be necessary, but if time or tools are limited, cut a small section in the plate to access the bolts.
3. Draining the Oil
Use a 17mm and 10mm socket to remove the drain bolts. Let the oil drain fully, then replace with new crush washers. Torque the 17mm bolt to 22 lb.-ft. and the 10mm to 11 lb.-ft.
4. Replacing the Oil Filter
On the passenger side near the rear tire, remove the three bolts on the oil filter housing. Remove the old filter and O-ring, and install new ones. Torque bolts to 8 lb.-ft.
5. Refilling the Engine Oil
Insert a 5/8-inch hose through a rear tray hole and into the fill tube. Using a funnel, pour in 3.7 quarts of oil. Start the engine briefly, shut it off, and recheck the oil level.
6. Draining the Transmission Oil
Find the 17mm drain bolt at the back and center of the skid plate. Remove it and allow the gear oil to drain. Inspect the magnetic drain plug, clean it, and reinstall with a new washer. Torque to 22 lb.-ft.
7. Refilling the Transmission Oil
The fill plug is on the passenger side behind the rear tire. Remove it and pour in 1.75 quarts of 75W-140 gear oil. Reinstall the plug securely.
Final Checks
After completing both oil changes, start the engine and check for leaks. Ensure all bolts are torqued properly and dispose of used oil and filters at a certified recycling facility.
