Thunderhawk's patent-pending double-shear radius rod support plate design is the key to building the strongest RZR RS-1 rear receiver hitch. The Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch replaces the original radius rod stiffener plate and features additional frame mounting points (at both the top and bottom) to securely mount the hitch directly to the frame without relying only on the four radius rod bolts for mounting. By mounting the hitch to the frame in this fashion, towing loads are transferred directly to the frame to provide superior strength and eliminate damage to the radius rod bolts.
Thunderhawk's patent-pending double-shear mounting plate upgrades the stock RS-1 suspension from a single-shear radius rod mount to a much stronger double-shear design. Thunderhawk's double-shear mount creates a second frame mount for the radius rods that is securely attached directly to the frame to support the rear of the radius rods. With the radius rods now supported on both the front (through the stock frame) and the rear (through the Thunderhawk double-shear plate), we have doubled the strength of the radius rod mounts, eliminating frame flex and stopping the problem of deforming, elongating (egging-out) & cracking around the radius rod mounting holes in the thin RS-1 frame. Thunderhawk's double-shear design provides a major benefit by increasing frame and suspension strength even when you unhook the trailer and hit the trails.
The Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch features a differential fluid service access hole so that you can easily check and top-off differential fluid without having to remove the hitch. Thunderhawk's exclusive double-shear mounting plate design makes this the only hitch available for the RZR RS-1 that does not apply additional strain to the four radius rod bolts when towing, but instead mounts to the vehicle frame to apply towing loads directly to the frame. This design also strengthens the radius rods and the rear frame at the same time. Rear suspension work is also made much easier as the radius rods can now be removed and re-installed easily.
Now, let's talk about fitment. Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitches feature direct frame mounting through our double-shear plate (that's why you're looking at these over the cheesy hitches that only mount using the four radius rod bolts, right?). Because of this, fitment of the Thunderhawk Double-Shear Hitch is affected by the width of the radius rods (where the bolt passes through at the frame end). The factory-installed radius rods on the RS-1 are 1 3/8" wide. If you have stock radius rods, we know what you need and our RS-1 hitch will fit perfectly. Most aftermarket radius rods will be 1 3/8" wide. If you have 1 3/8" aftermarket radius rods, you're good-to-go with this RS-1 hitch. If you have stock radius rods now, but may upgrade them to aftermarket radius rods later, that's no problem either - just be sure to verify that the aftermarket radius rods you buy are 1 3/8" wide (like the stock ones). There are also aftermarket radius rods that are 1 3/4" wide and a few that have some other odd-ball dimensions. The 1 3/4" wide radius rods match the factory-installed Polaris high-clearance radius rods (as used on the High Lifter and Trails & Rocks RZR models), and they will not fit with this hitch. The most common odd-ball dimensions occur when a company includes a flat four-bolt plate with their radius rods to replace the factory-installed formed four-bolt plate (and then they add spacers to make their flat plate fit). If the aftermarket radius rod itself measures 1 3/8", these spacers added to the lower radius rods can usually be removed to install the Thunderhawk RS-1 hitch, which is formed properly to match the Polaris frame. To assure that you receive the correct hitch for any RS-1 with aftermarket radius rods, we ask that you provide the measurement of your radius rods (see photo) when ordering.
OK, we're almost done with fitment. Rear bumpers can also create issues with any rear hitch. No bumper - No problem! If you have the Polaris Extreme rear bumper, the Thunderhawk RS-1 hitch will fit - go ahead and order when ready! If you have a frame-mount bumper like the Polaris bumper (see photo to identify frame-mount location), but your bumper has a cross-tube down low (see photo for example), then our RS-1 hitch may NOT fit (the low cross-tube will interfere with the receiver tube on the RS-1 hitch if it is below the plastic muffler cover). If you have one of those bumpers that has a lower mount that uses a four-bolt plate to replace the factory radius rod plate, then you can't fit any hitch (you probably also want to get rid of that bumper before you hit something and damage your rear suspension). We've intentionally kept this "bumper fitment" section short, call if you have further questions.
Thunderhawk hitches feature a durable black powdercoat finish and are constructed using an automotive-grade, reinforced receiver tubes for strength, durability and proper fitment with your towing accessories. We've also added double gussets to eliminate deflection of the receiver tube when towing, and twin tow hook points for easy attachment of tow hooks or winch cables when necessary. The factory tow point is still accessible too. The tongue weight rating for this hitch is 125 lbs. This Thunderhawk rear receiver hitch installs in about 45-60 minutes. Made in USA.
Thunderhawk Performance receiver hitches accept standard 2" automotive receiver hitch components. 2" receiver hitches are commonly used on most pick-up trucks. Many people already own these hitch bars and components, but these parts are also readily available at any large discount store or auto parts chain.
Note: PR2724 hitch will not fit with "low cross-brace" bumpers.
